Divn't Fret Pet

It's been a long time since I left you...and the rest, sorry that the blog ain't been updated recentally thats all going to be taken care of the next few days with tracklists for all the shows being upped...in case you listened and are still wondering what the fuck was that...and also so I have a record that isn't just lying around in a red A5 notebook.
Anyway yeah if you hadn't picked up on the fact that the show is now on Tuesday 21:00-23:00 on NSRFM.CO.UK then this is the warning, Forward Motion is on air again...also worth checking out in my humble opinion is the Monday back to back soundclash which all kicks off at 19:00 and blazes through to 23:00, and features my old buddies Unknown Pleasures followed by the Heavyweight guys, who bring premium dubstep action to the station, ...and to world headquarters, gutted I missed the last one due to a misbehaving gut and general fatigue due to a cold and too much work.
In the meantime tune in Tonight....
...also hold tight for a new Alex Bok Bok mix soon, in the meantime check out his show on Sub Fm which is on every other Monday 6-8pm...

24 Oct 2006

Delays and more...plus Lightbomb

Ok so the news is that Forward Motion will hit the internets audio pool very soon, and it will be Tuesday 9-11 pm on NSR FM. They're just fixing the streamer at the moment, so hopefully next Tuesday will see the return of Forward Motion....don't worry we won't be focusing entirely on dubstep, it's not all I listen to and as I don't mix I figure two hours of a mixture of related music, going down the electronic, beat-based leftfield club music direction...will describe it fairly broadly and totally unaccurately. Needless to say the playlists say it all, just means I'll have to find some new tunes out there that have the same effect on me as Para One's Beat Down, which is on the Dudes EP on Shadetek records and also on the Beat Down EP on Institubes.
In the meantime get yourself down to the Chillingham Arms on Chillingham Road in Heaton, to see Lightbomb/ Syphus, Fresh Jon, Firebrand and Outgroup (formerly Hadoken) should be well worth checking out. I know from past experiences that both Lightbomb and Outgroup are well worth checking out, and all I've heard is good things about Fresh Jon and Firebrand. I sadly won't be there due to a party that has been arranged for sometime, but less of that, get yourself down there and check it out.

Heavyweight Bass Pressure

So the countdown to the relaunch of NSR begins, I haven't had my show time officially confirmed but unless I hear any differently I'll assume my show is on Tuesday 9-11pm which trust me I'm happy as fat Larry about.
Got to say big up to the Heavyweight guys who will be on NSR as well, really looking forward to hearing the show, especially after a sick night was had by all on Thursday night at world headquarters. Great sets by all, I especially felt Elgato's set of rather fine garage made me smile from ear to ear, and skank in a rather mad way. So much so that by the time that Dynamix was on the decks my skanking had gone into a lactic acid controlled quarter step, or maybe the vodka and lack of sleep was to blame, and maybe some over enthuisatic bouncing to Gareth Hocking's set too. Also it was beautiful to see that blokes were outnumbered by lasses, who were skanking and shaking like there was no tomorrow, I certainly wished there wasn't a tomorrow but that was just the thought of work at 8:30. Next time I'll take my camera so you can have some physical evidence of the night.
The rumour mill is in full effect and all I can promise is that there are plenty more larger than life nights lined up in the coming months, and well even those who venture out only at weekends can attend too.

Dubstep Toon Takeover

So dubstep seems to be laying some roots in Newcastle, which can only be a good thing, I'm a little bored of breaks and drum'n'bass, let alone breakcore which although I do like the stuff I can't seem to stand a night of it.
So what are these nights I speak of, first off is Heavyweight which happens this Thursday at World Headquarters, and the guys Aems and Dynamix can then be heard on NSRFM on the 18th of this month.
Then we have a new venue for some dubstep shenigans in Stereo on the 9th November with DJ's Elgato, Gareth Hocking, Dynamix, Hado, and Nirz

Also on the NSRFM front Forward Motion looks to be back, more on this very soon.

24 Sept 2006

Last One?

So due to other commitments Tuesdays final show of Forward Motion is pre-recorded which means I can give you the tracklist now. I hope this one sounds as good as Fridays show to your ears, as their has been a bit more effort in editting etc than a normal two hour show entails. Sadly this is the last Forward Motion of this Utopia broadcast, and maybe the last for a while depending on the NSR situation.

The Irony Isn't Lost

What does it mean when Banksy is news worthy on Radio 2? I mean Radio 1 I could understand, but Radio 2, so yes I was flicking through stations on my phone on a metro ride home and came across radio 2 and I'm not an avid listener though I do know who they cater for and Banksy doesn't strike me as someone Radio 2's target audience would care for. I'm sure some avid fans of Banksy thanks to his exposure via the broadsheets may listen, but this seems slightly off kilter.
What was the story you may wonder, well it was that he who shall be called Banksy doctored 500 copies of the Paris Hilton album cover prior to them appearing in stores. Nice guerilla attack, I will admit she's a good target, though part of me wonders if this isn't the sort of PR that Paris's no doubt huge PR army have been dreaming about, an infamous artist doctoring you, its publicity she didn't need, hell I had forgot she was launching a sonic attack on us, and I'm sure I wasn't the only one. I have a feeling whether he intended to or not Banksy has done his victim a favour on this one.
Yes I do realise I'm acting as a PR for both of them with this, the irony isn't lost.

Updates and meandering self indulgent blogging

Ok so I return briefly, just to keep things updated, September 16th sees Utopia relaunch with a few tit bits hopefully from me...including Forward Motion and hopefully a one hour narrative in music, more on that when I have it done. Also the dubstep documentary should be stepping up a gear in the next few weeks, if you want to suggest voices/opinions you want to hear let me know, I'm trying to escape the normal documentary route so abstract thoughts are welcome. I'm thinking alot about narratives recentally, I'm thinking of weaving narratives on this documentary.
So why so quiet, I know this blog has and for the near future has never been on a par with the real blogs that I feed google reader with daily but I feel that this absensce has been extreme, even more extreme when I think that even the dubstep forum hasn't been accessed for far too long either. It feels like I've been withdrawn from music, and I'm not sure how it happened bar the fact that working in a jewellers has became my exsistence something I need to escape from quite quickly. If only to save my chances of completing a masters or even entering a world outside retail. I'll fill this with links when I have time. Relationships with work colleagues are frowned upon apparantly, I usually find them frought with very little common ground but your status quo, and well everyone has differing asspirations and goals. Though I have to comment that although it is all to obvious to what relationships they're refering, surely it just says something about the world we live in that they phrase it like this, ensuating as it does if you take it too literally that all around you should remain alien for fear of the firing. Although the banning of relationships in workplaces is surely a repressive line, I mean even if it's a ban against those between various levels or roles, surely work is the one place that relationships are likely to grow...I'm deeply romantic, in my opinion, as those who've read my ramblings long ago will know but meeting in work is more likely than say developing a close meaningful relationship on the public transport system, which is more than likely taking you too and from work. Maybe I should join a knitting club.
If you've stayed with this throughout well done, I expect you to buy my novel should I ever write or publish such a thing, judging from this I think it unlikely.

A Primer For July On This Wet June Night

Next month sees the release of the follow up to what I think of one of the best albums in my collection, and of 2004, October by Wasteland. The album itself merged so many genres into a melting pot that seemed to have hardcore structual backbone based in grime and somewhat loosely in crunk, yet had enough deep ambience and hints at both I-Sounds and DJ Scuds individual pasts that it made it a totally essential album for home listening, as well as one that had tracks that worked so well in a night environment it was untrue. Well now 2006 is upon us, the focus of 'urban music' has slightly shifted and so it seems has the focus of Wasteland from the one track that I've heard from the album before it hits the shops in July, Technology is a bass heavy, dark, judder monster that wears it's dubstep allegiences on the sleeve. I for one can't wait for the album.

Newcastle and Sunderland people beware DJ Marloboro is hitting World Headquarters on the 9th July as part of the excellent No-Fi series, bring on the funk carioca I will be there.

Doughnuts

I have to say that Lethal Bizzle although not my favourite MC has delivered a defence of "black music" in the wake of David Cameron's slamming of Tim Westwood's Radio 1 show and generally the presence of violence in lyrics. Its an age old accusation of culture creating a social problem, froms murders inspired by metallica to Cameron's current rage. My line on it is that targeting music is turning your eyes away from the causes of the problem and going for a target that doesn't require a great reassessment of the situation and the beliefs held by yourself and society at large.

Notice of Cancellation of Your Supply....and a few thoughts

So thats it until September, no more shows, but I shall survive somehow without a microphone near my mouth. Turns out that the streamer and playout computer in the NSR studio have had near fatal episodes in the past few weeks. I'd do a great job of explaining why, but quite frankly I think NSR overall doesn't deserve me trampling upon it, especially considering the last five years of broadcasting experience it's given me. I'm not sure if Forward Motion will return to NSR, we'll have to wait and see. Though fear not the show will be on Utopia in September all being well.
Not much to report at the moment, summer jaunts that have been planned seem unlikely to go ahead or will not go ahead. I'm definitley not going to Barcelona for Sonar or in fact the soot party in that fair city...I'm unlikely to be hitting London for FWD on Thursday, as much as I wanna go. In the meantime I'm currently setting up a documentary that will be looking at Dubstep and its roots...so people be wary I'll be hitting inboxes soon.
I'm currently listening to what I can only describe as a pleasant excursion into the country in the form of soft melting electronic loops, and folk elements, with lovely ambient samples all courtesy of a fellow geordie by the name of Matinee Orchestra, if you want what I just described for a bit of summer home listening I can't recommend enough if you wanna shock out and rave go pick up Kid 606's latest effort Pretty Girls Make Raves...a very true statement, it seems to be a recurring theme that to be a good night you need female presence...too many men spoil the party.

30 May 2006

Cancelation again

Oh damnation having to the cancel show tonight, and in fact I think that we don't have much time left for NSR shows...hopefully next week. Sorry guys

Information overlord

So this is the news upfront, hell it's being put on here before the official sources release it. Forward Motion will hit the FM parts of your dials, if you're in Sunderland or nearby, four times in the space of two week, for a grand total of 8 hours, do the maths.
So when can you catch me disrupting the airwaves, well lets start with a location and work towards times and dates. It'll be on 102.4 Utopia Fm and you'll be able to hear me on Monday 23:00 - 01:00 (Gonna be able to follow me with the Breezeblock, clever programming even if I say so myself) and Friday 23:00 - 01:00 (That's gonna kill me, with work at 10 the next morning).
What can you expect - the same music policy, jingles, me still, oh and internet users do not fear I will be still doing the NSR Tuesday night show, which will be used to highlight the best bits of the FM show too.
Oh and Myspace is taking over the world here is Utopia and the myspace music account for me.
In the meantime it's good to see that there is more new artwork up at eatmorechickens.
If I have anymore news be sure to know it will be here first...and no sadly there are no gigs lined up for me to DJ at which is just as well because I still can't beat match.

Ladies and gentlemen, the wait is nearly over...Forward Motion returns tomorrow night 9-11 at NSRFM complete with PART 2 of Bok Bok's latest mix for us, which is well worth the month long wait trust me.
Hold tight for Utopia

31 Mar 2006

In the meantime

Oh man, do I feel some frustration bubbling to the fore. NSR FM is off on it's easter break and not being at Newcastle Uni I didnt realise til the Tuesday afternoon, so part 2 of the grime vocals mix by Bok Bok will have to wait till late April, early May.
Talking of May, I'm happy to announce that between May 15th and 26th if you're in the Sunderland area you will be able to catch me on FM 2 times a week, we're working on sorting out a stream all being well. So that is Forward Motion twice a week on FM for 2 weeks in May. Yes, Forward Motion is the name thats been opt'd for, hopefully the show will be a nice bass filled excursion for the mackem lads and lasses.
Tracklists for the last few shows will appear here soon, as will a top 10.
In the meantime hold tight for the Burial album on Hyperdub, that is gonna be something serious.
Also get your ears digesting DJ Pinch's V.I.P mix of Qawwali...sparse and haunting, just immense.
Peace

Love today is Music

So the show this week had to be kept away from falling into any valentines sandtraps, didn't want anything too romantic, was planning on kicking it all the way up the gears for a big shockout session to welcome back the two hour shift and also to let heads forget valentines, but somehow the show took it's own course, as ever cd's not playing, cd's skipping, cd players not recognising cd's...all the usual shenigans really.

As ever big up to Bok Bok who manages to keep me on my toes both with his feedback and his own show. For those who want to discover who the shy retiring or, if you believe certain people, the seductively voiced southern geordie is then here is Matt DV, me on myspace

Back in Cyberspace

So I returned to the airwaves last night, one hour only now but I think to be honest that keeps what I play down to what is truly essential though I think you'll notice that grime and dubstep will begin to outweigh everything else I play. XvScott has warned me that the streaming is still a little dodgy I'll have a word about that, although I do know that everything was fine with my levels, even if I wasn't cueing things up for levels, tut tut. Apart from that the usual CD player issues struck, Kode 9's Fukkaz just didn't sound right to me tonight.
I'm currently planning a website, which will feature some downloads of my non-musical radio stuff, currently working on a reworking of a soundscape I completed less than a month ago, and also an audio version of Beauty Is A Skill if I can get my ass in gear and record it without any trips or floundering.
So anyway here is the tracklist from last night
Peace
Matt

Well I'm now a little more optimistic

All being well the show will return next tuesday, from what I've heard of NSR's stream the sound quality isn't back to what it should be, the show will finish at 11 from now on building management issues.
What is going on at NSR at the minute gives me the chance to reflect and in hindsight I regret being part of the executive committee that introduced the constant stream. The problem as I see it is the studio is now constantly in use, which means that NSR never gets a chance to get the team in their for one on one training, and the chance to rerecord some of the jingles, let alone tidy it up, and with the building issues it just doesn't work for NSR...to be honest NSR reflects exactally what is happening with student radio in the UK, there is a clear lack of direction. Stations are looking for ways to compete with the likes of Radio 1 and in most cases they do this by replicating Radio 1, and not looking for their own format, I'm aware of the issues you can only do what your presenters want to do, but with a bit of training it might be possible to change the direction. The other key issue is that in the current market place is student radio is financially struggling, their isn't the money about to support student radio through commercials anymore, local businesses that rely on students for business have realised that in most cases listenership is not what we'd all like it to be and that there other, better ways to attract business.
The biggest issue facing student radio is just how insular most management teams make student radio, the amount of bickering among members puts people off listening to the station, sees the genuine talent leave the station, and student radio cannot simply afford to be a club for those record collections, instead it needs to be a far more positive experience, that will help push the stations forwards, but forward thinking student unions are also needed, as well as the type of station management that will push a station in the right direction instead of gettin stuck in the replication of the past.

It's off tonight, next week I'll be back!!!

So the server/compressor are down and out of action, so I hear.
So I'm at home putting together a production file for a proposal of a radio documentary on the subject of Sonic Warfare, entitled Sounds Dangerous! Just added the exclamation mark now, I like it but it might be a little too street and young for the proposed audience, this is all hypothetical it won't be getting made anytime soon, it's just an idea for university, though I'd be interested in making it. In amongst this production file is a Kode9 compilation, which seems a bit weird so I'm currently writing a few hundred words on why I think it would work on the particular network.
But I digress, I haven't bought any new records, I have however bought some MP3's from Bleep, finally got Stalker (where is sign of the dub? disappointed), DMZ001 finally and erm some other stuff that I've forgotten already.
Anyone got any requests for next weeks show, other than that there be one! Also check out Bok Bok on Saturday nights, man his record collection.
Peace
Matt

Compression, huh?

This blog is starting to sound like I have nothing but troubles, yet again I have to state that I had problems during the show...yes the compressor was playing up and affecting the levels of bass going through, while I also got told the building was closing at 11 so I had to cut my show short by an hour. However it was good to blow the cobwebs off, and throw out a selection of some of my favourites tunes from last year, and one or two new ones. If you want some really heavy dubstep go check out the breezeblock dubwars at the usual sources.
