Saving Face

As there appears to be no show this week, I want to wish Happy New Year to the guys at Lower End Spasm, who have just posted this gift to us all, Essentials and Oneman downloads.
Well anyway I need to see what is on tomorrow night, so happy new year and catch you all in 2009.
And if you need more tuneage to prepare you for the nights festivities well Dazed have a treat courtesy of Zomby, which currently has me struggling to remain seated, thank you Zomby.
Oh yeah just been reminded I never put the link up for L-Vis 1990 and Bok Bok's Night Slugs Mix over at Fact, so here you go.
Face Saved.

Moving Forward

I'm currently riding the East Coast mainline home from London. Knowing that when I get in I have to assemble this weeks show. I'm currently listening to L Vis 1990 n Bok Bok in the mix for fact, which you should certainly check out. (I'll link to it when I have a computer in front of me.)
Anyway on to the point of this post, who thinks this site needs a change, a new lick of paint? I'm thinking that things are going to get busy with some refurbishment. I'm not fully certain of what will be done, so if you have any suggestions you know where I'm at.

7 Dec 2008

beats to warm you in the freezer

So it is officially weather to wear scarves, or better still to sit inside and listen to beats, if you can't be bothered getting out on your bike or something.
Anyway here is a tip off this weeks show (Which was meant to be last weeks show, until issues arose) features beats by Mike Slott, L Vis 1990, Rustie, Joker, Bossman, Lewi White, Diplo, and many more. So go ahead and check it out on Tuesday night, 10 pm til Midnight on FuturebeatRadio.
Anyway I'm going to go back to listening to the latest album on Skull Disco, Soundboy's Gravestone gets Desecrated by Vandals, which I have to say is immense and deep, just as you'd expect it. I'm sure next weeks show will include a cut from it.

24 Nov 2008

Riding straight into a head wind

Well this weeks show is being uploaded to the server as we speak, ready for tomorrow night 10pm til Midnight. Expect some Buraka Som Sistema, Deadbeat, Joker, Mike Slott, Sunship, Drop the Lime, The Bug, Flying Lotus and much more. All energised by a bike ride where my face was stung by hail as I rode straight into the wind, great fun, I was grinning through my grimace.
I might even get this weeks tracklist up. In the meantime I'm going to enjoy this weeks Between the Ears. Which is so far, so intriguing.

The State of Play

So what is the deal with Forward Motion? I'm often wondering that aloud to myself these days, I've always tried to keep the show upfront and fresh, and to try and make the show as far from repeatitive as possible, at the moment though I'm questioning the direction in which the show is heading.
The music policy has recently been lets just say chaotic, nothing wrong with that, chaos is a wonderful thing, and maybe chaotic is not the right word after all it carries negative connotations to many. What I think I'm trying to get at is that the music policy has been very loose, and I haven't been as discplined as I would like. One of the concerns I have had with the show, one that I had back in March when we found ourselves on Future Beat, was that the music I was listening to seemed to suit being mixed rather than just put into the put it on and play it format I favour, I'm no DJ and I can't mix, I've been advised to learn by some, but by those who know how bad my rhythm can be I haven't pursued, well not since I was 18 and a very patient friend tried educating me on her 1's and 2's.
Anyway I'm just trying to work out what I'm doing with the show, I feel that playing some of the music I'm loving now is doing it no favours, especially with the ease of access to great mixes and radio, if you haven't already check out Bok Bok on Sub Fm (Sats 17:00 - 19:00 fortnightly). Where as at the other end of the scale the likes of MAH have access to fresh dubplates, and make sure that each weeks show sounds fresh. So what to do with Forward Motion? I have some ideas, I'm just trying to work them out. Fear not those who do listen I won't be hanging up the headphones and mic. Also we do now have a Forward Motion group on Facebook, now thats advancement.

20 Oct 2008

A little diversion from beats to bikes.
This weeks Thinking Allowed on Radio 4 caught my ear today, mainly for the second half looking at the happiness in the job of cycle messengers. Though it feels like Radio 4 are becoming obsessed with the subject matter of messengers. This also made me think about what my own career, and well what I want to do with myself.

19 Oct 2008

A Break from MS Word

I just thought I'd take these spare moments between application forms, and other important business to give you a heads up of what is upcoming on this weeks show (Tuesday 22:00 - 24:00). You can expect beats from Para One, Gescom, Martin Brothers, Rustie, DJ Rob 3, Timeblind, Joker and more. I'll try and up a tracklisting later on, but as mentioned above I'm keeping myself quite busy at the moment, as well as doing some reconnecting with the less virtual world on my bike and socialising. I have to say though if you do want a track IDing give me a shout and I'll send the info through.
Back to word.

13 Oct 2008

I could say more

So I've just uploaded tomorrow nights show, some interesting new sounds dropped, not enough in my opinion but there is some new stuff on there.
In the meantime I'm thinking of exploring the more ambient side of recorded material for a show. I'm not talking Boards of Canada, Nathan Fake and Aphex Twin. Don't get me wrong there is nothing wrong with those guys, I'm just talking more about those small segments of weird noises and drones, along with those off kilter speech moments. I have no idea when that will hit the web, but keep your eyes and ears open.
In the meantime go listen to DJ /Rupture's show on WFMU, especially Kode 9 in the mix. Thanks to Bok Bok for reminding me to check the Kode 9 mix out.

30 Sept 2008

Tonight in the mix: Laura O'Shea

On this weeks show I have a special guest mix from Laura O'Shea, who I have to say is a quite fine DJ. Check out her myspace profile, complete with one of her productions under the Cosmic G monicker, for more information. Just to give you an idea of her skills she recently one the Open Decks DJ comp up here in Revolution, Newcastle. Oh and she is also the lady behind the Forward Motion idents. Anyway I hope you all enjoy the mix.
If you hadn't already guessed I'm trying to sort out the direction Forward Motion is going. I began writing an essay which actually hit home, even if I wasn't the intended audience, but it did make me realise that some changes were in order. Some of these changes will be slower to filter down, but I'm hoping to get my stuff together and so the show can become something distinct and so can this blog too. Be patient.
I'll also have news of a one off Forward Motion show.

29 Aug 2008

Better Late Than

So here is this weeks tracklisting, brought to you a little later than expected. I will blame part of this on work, and part of it on my desire to get fit and ride my bike a bit more often. Holding My Hands Up

Ok, I hold my hands up I screwed up, messed up and haven't posted the tracklistings for a few shows, which sucks, I know. Just so you know this week the show is back full-time, in terms of a show and a tracklisting (by Wednesday night).
In the meantime, just to give you a heads up that you can hear some Kode9, Ghislain Poirier, Jammer, Curses, Kid Cudi and much much more...

Right I need to get on my bike.

4 Aug 2008

Just to tempt you

So in preparation for tomorrow nights show I thought I'd throw the highlights of the tracklisting forward, so if you want some Zomby, Joker, Rustie, Megasoid, Ghislain Poirier, Riow Arai, Dawn Penn and a whole bunch more then the show starts at 10pm UK time over at Futurebeat Radio
The full tracklisting will appear soon.
In the meantime I need to stretch my legs out, I've spent an hour pedalling along the coast, and I'm not as fit as I should be.

29 Jul 2008

Where to?

Dan, over at the Lower End Spasm, makes a very good point about the state of play in 2008, and what is going on with the grime/electro thing. I think he highlights a few issues I've been having lately, that has led me to be lacking enthuisiasm. I did give myself a cross to bear by calling the show Forward Motion, a name that suggests nothing but the progressive and innovative. So when the grime I'm playing is at least 2 years old what am I saying? Either the new stuff isn't getting through to me, or I'm not feeling it, and well to be honest I think I'm just not feeling it.
That same observation goes for much of dubstep, there seems to be a shift towards an ever increasing reliance on formulas something that I don't think can ever be a positive step. Maybe it's just me.
So the question has to be where to?
Well at the minute I'm listening to DJ Venom and Damage in the mix.

22 Jul 2008

Too Much Bass on Your Radio!

So while I'm wasting a perfectly nice evening sitting at a computer, having just put a few mixes onto my phone for my communting needs, I decided I'd best check out Bok Bok and Manara on Rupture's show. Always worth checking out, I mean come on this week he has Kode 9 in with him, tonight even. So how about this for an idea, listen back to Bok Bok and Manara, then wait for Kode 9 and Rupture to go live on WFMU.

Getting on my bike

Ok so here goes, two weeks in a row when I've managed to get the tracklisting for the show up. Remember it can be heard on futurebeatradio.com three times a week, only one new show a week though. Tuesdays 22-24:00, Thursday 04-06:00, and Sunday 02-04:00 UK time.

Before I hit you with the tracklisting I thought I'd bet give some extra blogspace to Bok Bok and Manara who are out in New York at the moment, and have posted a new mix over at the Lower End Spasm that is well worth downloading and playing at home, on the bus, the bike, hell anywhere.

They're also going to be on DJ /Rupture's radio show whilst they're out there, which will also be well worth checking out on Wednesday Night on WFMU.

Can I just say I don't get electric lawnmowers, what is wrong with mechanical old school use your own energy mowers that don't make a lazy Sunday morning turn into a buzz of electric noise.

23 May 2008

Two mixes to check while I get it together

It turns out that I'm not the greatest at updating tracklists, but anyway Discobelle have this great mix by Drop the Lime which I'd advise you to check out, I'm guessing it's great just from the tracklist. I'm currently downloading it myself. And I see that Alex Bok Bok has posted this mix also at Lower End Spasm , along with a tasty looking Kingdom mix.

So anyway, yeah I promise tracklistings will resume soon. Send your hate here.

5 May 2008

You're fired! This has nothing to do with the Apprentice

Ok, so I should be sacked, it turns out that updating tracklistings is difficult and thus it is done infrequently and not very well. Though again nobody has told me to pull my finger out, so either I have no listeners or everyone can understand what I'm saying.
So as I'm off work today and well I'm uploading this weeks show I think I better put the tracklisting for that one up now. While it's fresh.

1 Apr 2008

How about some abience?

So this one isn't track listings, but more something to do if you have some downtime that you're not sure what to do with. How about listening to something you might not ordinarily get the chance to listen to, well at least in your everyday experiences. I have two suggestions for out there ambient audio streams.

1, The Underwater Sound of the Antartic Ocean (Which I admit I got here from the excellent BLDG Blog)

or

2, Space, or more precisiley the sound from a radio telescope.

Either way both are pretty intriguing.

Also don't forget Forward Motion is on air/online tonight 10-12 on futurebeatradio.com, and always open to your suggestions for features, mixes, interviews or whatever else you want to hear. No air guitar anthems though!

18 Mar 2008

Aqua crunk?

If you want something to listen to before Forward Motion hits the airwaves tonight, at 22:00 gmt, then go check this mix by Rustie and Hudson Mohawke. I have heard what Rustie is doing being called aqua crunk step, but I have to say I don't quite get that label, it just seems a bit too well erm I don't know, it's not what I would call it. You can hear some Rustie later on in the show if you can hang tight, and see what you think.

And just so you all know that Forward Motion is prerecorded, I would hate anybody to think that I was doing it live...I'm not lazy, it's just I can never guarantee that I'll be able to be at a computer at that time. Go check out FutureBeat.

If you have any tunes, hit me up.

17 Mar 2008

What do you reckon then?

So the first show finally went out on futurebeat, and the next episode is ready to roll. Any feedback is as always appreciated.

I think the next few weeks will allow the show to get back upto it's feet, my record collection always feels bare after a few weeks, it just seems that you end up playing the same names, which is no problem when it's good quality. I'm just going to keep my ear pressed firmly to the pavement to stay aware of what is coming up, or if you want to scrap that metaphor I'm just going to have to pay more attention to blogs, dj mixes, and well what other shows are putting out.

The trickiest thing for me is finding the right way of presenting the show, in terms of what I say, but also with the music policy, if I really have one, it isn't a dj mix therefore it doesn't have to be floor fillers, but I don't want the show to be too much like a home listening exercise where what goes down well in clubs is not played out.

And on that note if any DJ's want to do a guest mix give me a shout.

9 Mar 2008

Shaking the airwaves

Forward Motion is back on the airwaves, and shaking them too.
We will be broadcasting on Futurebeatradio.com, and you can check us out Tuesday 22:00 - 0:00, or on repeat at Thursday 04:00 - 06:00 and Sunday 02:00 - 04:00.
I am currently putting together the first show and you can expect some Ghislain Poirier, Dexplecit, Kode 9 and TTC...it doesn't sound like things have moved on, does it? Trust me we have.

4 Mar 2008

An update from Soundscape

I just thought I'd give you an update on the Soundscape FM front, I'm spending a fair bit of my time here at the moment. If you want to hear how bad I can sound on radio AV2day at 1pm should show you me cracking under pressure and sounding not great.
Also tomorrow we're broadcasting a day called space day, including 2 piece's I'm working on both called Out There In Here....they should be interesting.

1 Mar 2008

Motion towards an Ambient Soundscape

Just so you all know I will be hosting an ambient soundscape on soundscape fm on Sunday 3rd, between 4 and 6pm live on 87.7fm in Sunderland, and globally for all those who need it at the AV Festival site and just click on the link saying open the AV player.

28 Feb 2008

Two buses?

Just when you think you might not hear anything from me ever again, comes news that soon very soon in one case you will be able to hear quite a bit from me.
For one I'll be bringing Forward Motion back, on a new station Future Beat Radio. Scheduling will be announced soon.
Secondly and far more imminent is my involvement in Soundscape FM which will be broadcasting across Sunderland, from tonight till the 8th March as part of the AVfest. I'll be hopefully commiting some 60 second pieces to the air, as well as an ambient soundscape. Also expect to hear me covering some of the events of the avfestival.
More firm news soon.

20 Jan 2008

Coming Soon?

OK so while I have been suggesting radio stations to check out, and reminiscing on the past of Forward Motion with those pictures, it seems time that maybe we get back down to the nitty gritty after all it's a new year.

So I have missed several heavyweights and quite frankly I'm gutted, and hope to be back down there soon, maybe starting with Iration Steppas, and Hatcha and Crazy D at World Headquarters on the 7th Febuary.

So what next for Forward Motion, except for attending more club nights. Well I am hoping that Forward Motion will be back after a years abscence as a fully function radio show. Whilst I'll also be doing more little side platters, here and there, maybe not everywhere (Got to start slowly). I think it'll be interesting to compare the tracklists of previous shows to where it will be this year. I think it may well be more dance floor friendly than previously.

Ciao for now.

Oh by the way if you want a tasty look at the campaign trail in the states, it's here at My Fellow Americans.
